Getting down to the business of study

We all have difficulty finding time to study, particularly when we are trying to juggle work, social and family commitments with our study.

This is something thousands of students around the country deal with everyday.

But most do this successfully.

Everyone has a different way of solving this challenge, depending on their individual circumstances, and learning styles. Below are some general tips to get you started.

  1. Plan a time to study when you know you are most alert. Some people study well in the morning, others are more alert in the early evening.
  2. Use a weekly planner to schedule time when you will be free to study without distractions. It’s a good idea to schedule study time into your diary in the same way you would schedule an appointment or meeting up with friends.
  3. If you are new to study, or are returning to study after a long break, begin by planning to study in short blocks of time, with frequent breaks. You can slowly increase the length of these sessions over time.
  4. Let others know when you are planning to study, so that they know not to disturb you during this time.
  5. Find yourself a suitable place for regular study. Choose a place that is quiet, well lit, has comfortable furniture, and enough desk space to accommodate you and all of your study materials.
  6. Before you start to study, remove anything from your work space that is likely to distract you e.g. Turn off the T.V, the radio, and mobile phones. Or remove unfinished household chores, books and any paperwork unrelated to your study.
  7. Also, before you begin to study, set yourself some specific goals for that study period. e.g. To read and make notes from pages 80 - 83 of your text.

Finally at the end of each study period give yourself some kind of reward for your efforts. e.g. a favourite snack, watching your favourite T.V. show, buying yourself some flowers or spending time with friends.

Happy Studying!!
