This Course shows you
in every detail how to write for children of all ages - teen fiction,
non-fiction, story books (9-12 yr olds), early readers (6-8 yr olds)
and picture books.
The most important
requirement is that you are able to look at the world from a child's
point of view. Can you cast your mind back to your own life at different
ages? Can you remember what it felt like to be five years old, or
the new kid at school, or a teenager suffering from doubts about
popularity and self-esteem?
If you can, you're
well on the way to being able to write interesting, convincing books
for children. The child you once were is the most useful resource
you have - and you carry that child with you everywhere you go.
One of the best things
about writing for children is that they are continually being exposed
to books and reading. Children have to attend school from approximately
5 to 15 years of age. When they walk into their classrooms, what
do they see?
Books! Books their
teachers have put there. Books other kids bring along to school.
Books offered to them through the book clubs that thrive in schools.
And one day a week, and quite possibly in their lunch hour as well,
they go into the school library . . . full of books written by people
just like you.
Their parents read
to them. Their babysitters read to them! Children are surrounded
by books. Even children who have reading problems need books - special
easy-to-read books that will seize their interest. All those books
out there . . . and somebody has to write them. It might as well
be you!
